You heard footsteps behind you. “Can’t sleep?” You looked over your shoulder and nodded. Standing there was one of the people you had been traveling with. Kohta Hirano, a fellow high school student. You both had been in the same class for a few years, but you hadn’t talked much before all this happened. You still remember that day in the school when it all started.
You had been in the back of the school under a tree enjoying your lunch when you had heard the scream. You had jumped to your feet ignoring your half eaten lunch. When the first person stumbled behind the school your eyes had widen, but you weren’t fooled like some people could have been. The person’s jaw was hanging by a bit of flesh and there was a large hole in his chest. You didn’t take a second to study him, you ran inside the school before he spotted you. You were a horror fan, so it didn’t take you two guesses at what you had just seen. First rule, get a weapon. Then you could figure out what was happening and how to get out of here. That was when you had run into Kohta and your fellow classmate Saya Takagi. Together the three of you had gotten weapons and met up with fellow students Takashi Komuro, Rei Miyamoto, Saeko Busujima and the school nurse Shizuka Marikawa. Together you all got out of the school and were currently hiding in one of Shizuka’s friend’s house. Seems she working for the military so there was no shortage of weapons.
You smiled remember how cute Kohta was when he saw the guns. It turns out that he was crazy about guns. He had spent yesterday showing you and the others how to use the guns. They weren’t the first choice in a fight with ‘them’ because it would attract more, but in a pinch they were good to have.
Kohta stepped up next to you at the window. He was holding one of the assault rifles he picked up earlier. “You should try to get some sleep (Name).”
“I know, but it’s not easy. Ever since this started, we haven’t been a lot a night to sleep. Just a few minutes were we could. I guess I’m too wired to sleep.”
“We have all the doors and windows downstairs bared and a trip wire downstairs so we’ll know if anything moves.” Kohta assured you. “Nothing will get in here without us knowing about it.”
“I know.” You laughed nervously. “I can’t help feeling I’ll have nightmares if I try to sleep.”
“Being awake is like a nightmare too.”
“True but at least if anything happens here I’ll be aware enough to do something. I’m helpless in a dream.”
“It would be a shame to see you with bags under your eyes.” Kohta mumbles under his breath.
You tilted your head. “What?”
Kohta blushed pushing up his glasses. “W-well you’re cute. It would be a shame if you got bags under your eyes.”
You blushed brushing your hair behind your ears. “I-I’m too nervous to sleep, in a huge bed by myself.” The other girls had doubled up rooms so that no one was alone. You didn’t think you were going to sleep, so you said you would be the one to stay alone in the remaining room.
“I thought you said you were okay with the single room?”
“I figured I wouldn’t sleep anyway and I can’t really take it back now. Every else is already asleep.”
Kohta rubbed the back of his head. “W-well we could share a room. If it will help you sleep.” Kohta waved his arms frantically in front of him. “N-not that I’d try anything! I mean we would just sleep! I-I’m making it worse aren’t I?”
You giggled. “Kind of, but I know what you mean Kohta. I would like to take up your offer.”
“Really?”
You nodded. “I trust you.” You grinned. “Besides, I’ll keep this guy close by.” You picked up the crow bar.”
Kohta held his hands up. “I’ll be good.”
“Good, now let’s get some sleep.” You walked over turning off the light. You and Kohta carefully made your way to the room making sure not to knock over anything. You opened the door to the room and turned on the light. Once your eyes adjusted, you felt yourself blinking more. The bed was much smaller then you had thought. You and Kohta would fit in it, but it would be a tight fit.
Kohta came in after you and noticed the bed. “You still okay with this?”
“Of course. I want to get some sleep.” You walked over kicking your shoes off next to the bed. You then placed the crowbar leaning against the wall in arms reach. You then removed the knife and guns and put them on the night stand. Kohta went to the other side of the bed and put his rifle against the wall. You slipped into the bed and Kohta slipped in next to you. Just as you thought, there wasn’t much room between you two. “Kohta, can I ask you something?”
“Sure, what is it?”
“Did you mean what you said before?” You felt your cheeks grow warm. “About me being cute.”
“Oh that.” Kohta scratched his cheek. “Yeah I did. I’ve always thought you were cute, I just never had the nerve to talk to you.”
“I always thought you were interesting, but I figured you wouldn’t want to talk to someone like me.” You giggled. “And your reaction to guns is really cute.”
“Really?”
You nodded. “Yep really. I’m glad at least because of all this, I was finally able to talk to you.”
“And I got to talk to you.” Kohta shy put a hand on your side, when you didn’t push thing away, he pulled you close to him. “Now that I have, I’m going to do everything I can to get you out of here.”
You held onto his shirt. “And I’ll watch your back. You’re getting out of this too. I’ll make sure of it.”
Kohta smiled. “Thanks (Name).” He gently kissed your hair. “Now get some sleep.”
“Okay, night Kohta.” You closed your eyes.
Kohta held you closer. “Goodnight (Name).” For the first time since ‘them’ first appeared you felt safe. That night, you slept peacefully in Kohta’s arms.
